Machine learning (ML) is the process of using one or more computer programs to find an answer to a specific question in an unstructured way, i.e., without explicitly giving the questions and answers to the computer. It requires a large and fast network of computers in order to perform the task.

Types of Machine Learning

There are two major types of machine learning: supervised machine learning and unsupervised machine learning.

Supervised Learning

Supervised learning takes as input a large amount of data and can then extract patterns and predict the behaviour of the data. The features are set to maximize the amount of the signals.

Unsupervised Learning

Unsupervised learning is carried out without an explicit set of features, but by observing existing data. It is used for applications where the characteristics of the unknown entity(s) need to be discovered using relatively few examples.

Supervised learning is the bread and butter of machine learning as it helps in the development of better algorithms for object detection, speech recognition and face detection. However, unsupervised learning offers the ability to identify patterns in data that may not be present in the data obtained from supervised learning.

Examples of Machine Learning

  • eBay, Flipkart and Amazon recommendations based on the customer’s browsing and purchasing behaviour. The way you search and purchase on Amazon, the better the recommendations it gives.

Machine learning algorithms usually use some form of pre-processing and then predictions can be made. They usually have a very good way to learn from data given what has been pre-processed. Post Doc in ISTITUTO ITALIANO DI TECNOLOGIA (IIT)

The candidate to this position will work, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, on a challenging project in the field of nano-photonics and opto-electronic devices for biosensors with extreme sensitivity. The work aims to develop new hybrid biointerfaces (namely the interface between nanostructured devices and living neural tissues) and next-generation bio-sensing with particular focus on plasmonic sensors. Access to state-of-the-art micro- and nanofabrication facilities and biological facilities.

Requirements for Postdoc in Nano-Photonics

The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, or related field; strong experience in top-down fabrication approaches and clean room technologies (optical and electron beam lithography, deposition of metals and dielectrics, RIE, focused ion beam, ALD, imprinting).

Experience in microfluidics and nanofluidics, bottom-up fabrication methods (bead lithography, galvanic deposition, solution based technologies), experimental optics and/or electronics will be considered a plus. Excellent presentation and writing ability together with publication of original scientific work in high-quality journals will be highly valued.

IIT offer a post-doctoral position in Genoa with competitive annual remuneration depending on candidate’s experience.

Qualification

A successful applicant needs to have the ability to conduct independent research work, possess good collaboration skills and be fluent in the English language.

The applicant is expected to have strong experience in SN/transients observations (photometry, spectroscopy) and/or host galaxy environment studies. Experience with handling IFU data is an advantage.

Fixed Term Position

The fixed-term position starts as soon as possible, preferably by 1 September 2020, and will last until 31 August 2022 irrespective of the starting date.

There is a possibility for a one year extension. Candidates are encouraged to apply for positions of the Academy of Finland to extend this period.

Salary

The salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel.

For a postdoctoral researcher, the salary is at levels 4-6 on the job demands chart, where the task-specific salary component is 2535,20-3423,25 EUR/month.

In addition, a personal work performance component at a maximum of 50 % of the task-specific salary will be paid. There is a trial period of six months.

The journal indexing such as Science Citation Index (SCI) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) are received more good reputation across the publishing industries to measure performance and citation metrics of both at the journal and author level.

The journals indexed under this databased are considered to be the world’s leading journals of science and technology, because of a rigorous selection process.

The different indexing categories carried out by the journal evaluation companies create more confusion among researchers to choose the right journal for the publication of their scientific manuscripts.

What is the difference between SCI, SCIE and ESCI Journals?

Scientific Citation Indexing (SCI) service originally produced by the Institute for Scientific Information(ISI) during 1964. ISI was acquired by Thomson Scientific & Healthcare in 1992 and named Thomson Reuters Intellectual Property and Science Business, which became known as Thomson ISI, later it maintained by Clarivate Analytics to provides a comprehensive citation search of all indexing.

The Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) is the larger version SCI which covers more than 8,500 notable and significant journals, across 150 disciplines, from 1900 to the present.

SCIE is similar to the SCI except for the two differences:

  1. Impact factor: SCI has non zero impact factor but SCIE journals are just ranked for impact factor.
  2. Storage formate: Both SCI and SCIE are available online. However, SCI is available on CD/DVD format but SCIE is not.

Why SCI Index and SCIE Integration?

SCI and SCIE do not differ in the quality of the paper, but only in the difference that SCI is data provided on CD/DVD and SCIE is data provided online. Also, it creates confusion among SCI and SCIE’s classification and identification of the journals.

To solve this problem, Clarivate Analytics said it has been working to set internal policies and add information and URLs for each journal since October 2019, and that it will provide SCI by integrating SCI into SCIE without officially using SCI classification as of January 3, 2020.

With this information, all SCI journals in the Web of Science Core Collection are classified as SCIE form January 2020.

Basic requirements for indexing in Web of Science (WoS)?

All journals submitted to the core Web of Science databases will be evaluated by the following criteria.

  • Whether the journal follows a proper peer review process?
  • Whether the journal follows ethical publishing practices?
  • Whether the journal meets technical requirements?
  • The journal has good English language bibliographic information or not?
  • Whether the journal recommended or requested by a scholarly audience of Web of Science users.

If the journal passed the evaluation in a successful way it will be indexed in the ESCI while undergoing more in-depth editorial review.
