The Fulbright Specialist Program provides an opportunity for Indian universities and institutions of higher learning to draw on the expertise of U.S. scholars and professionals and develop linkages with American institutions. Specialist grants focus on strengthening and supporting the development needs of institutions and broadening institutional cooperation. Fulbright Specialists work in their areas of expertise as they enhance their understanding of the cultural and educational contexts of the host country through engagement with the host community.

Eligible Institutions

Host institutions should be involved in university-level teaching or training, the expansion of partnerships between universities and specialized institutions, and the promotion of international and cross-institutional cooperation. Institutions eligible to request a Fulbright Specialist include:

  • Institutions/organizations of higher education approved and listed on the website of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, including institutions accredited by AICTE, UGC and other Apex Level Bodies of the Ministry )
  • Medical institutions accredited by the Medical Council of India (MCI)

Possible Fulbright Specialist Activities

The Fulbright Specialist Program encourages host institutions to tailor projects to their own needs. However, all projects should have an education or training focus. Due to the short-term nature of the exchange, projects should have concrete objectives that can be achieved over the course of the Specialist’s visit. Past Specialists have supported host institutions by conducting activities such as:

  • Delivering seminars or workshops
  • Consulting on faculty or workforce development
  • Developing academic or training curricula and materials
  • Lecturing at the graduate or undergraduate level
  • Conducting needs assessments or evaluations for a program or institution

Note: Personal research projects, including clinical medical research or projects involving patient contact, are not eligible for funding under the Fulbright Specialist Program.

Grant Length

The length of a Fulbright Specialist project must be a minimum of 14 days and a maximum of 42 days, including travel days and weekends.

Program Costs

Costs for Fulbright-Nehru Specialist grants are shared by USIEF and the host institution. USIEF pays for international airfare and an honorarium to the Specialist. The host institution is responsible for the cost of housing, meals and any necessary, program- related, in-country transportation. In-country costs may be supplied by the host institution as in-kind services and/or funds paid directly to the specialist. Note that in-country transportation refers to transportation once the Specialist has arrived in the city of the activity, and not to flights taken as part of the international travel.

Eligible Fields

Eligible fields include Agriculture • American (U.S.) Studies • Anthropology • Archaeology • Biology Education • Business Administration • Chemistry Education • Communications and Journalism • Computer Science and Information Technology • Economics • Education • Engineering Education • Environmental Science • Law • Library Science • Math Education • Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies • Physics Education • Political Science • Public Administration • Public/Global Health • Social Work • Sociology • Urban Planning.

Download sub-disciplines in each eligible field.

Requesting a U.S. Scholar

Specialists, who represent a wide range of professional and academic disciplines, are competitively selected to join the Fulbright Specialist Roster based on their knowledge, skill sets, and ability to make a significant contribution to projects overseas. Those individuals that have been approved to join the Fulbright Specialist Roster are then eligible to be matched with approved projects designed by host institutions. Host institutions have the following options for requesting a U.S. scholar:

  • Roster Named Requests identify Specialists already on the Roster in the project application. The host institution and the Specialist have been in contact and mutually agreeable project dates and goals are included in the project application.
  • Named Requests to identify an individual that is not on the Roster, but specifically requested by the host institution. The host institution and the Specialist candidate have been in contact and mutually agreeable project dates and goals are included in the project application. A candidate may apply to the Roster before a project application is submitted, but will need to be peer-reviewed and approved. Candidates not on the Roster who are in contact with host institutions are strongly encouraged to immediately apply to the Roster by visiting the following link: https://worldlearning-community.force.com/FSP/WL_SiteLogin.
  • Open Requests do not identify a candidate in the project proposal. USIEF and World Learning will assist with identifying an individual with suitable technical or professional experience that is approved by the host institution.

Also refer to: https://fulbrightspecialist.worldlearning.org/eligibility-host-institutions/.

IMPORTANT – India-Specific Guidelines for Submitting Applications

Please read the following guidelines carefully before proceeding further.

  1. Applications requesting multiple visits for specialists will not be approved. Therefore, please do not select this option when submitting the form.
  2. No more than one application in a field from an institution should be submitted.
  3. Funding is not available to cover any part of local hospitality expenses on behalf of the host institution. Local hospitality (housing, meals, local transportation, and program-related in-country travel) must be borne by host institutions. Therefore, please do not select options that will make your application ineligible.
  4. Grants are limited. Preference will be given to institutes/university departments that have not hosted a Fulbright Specialist in the last three years.
  5. All selected applicants will be notified about the result by August 2023.
  6. Processing of the selected applications typically takes 4-5 months after the deadline. Please take this timeline into account when planning the start date of the project.

Application Procedure

Interested institutions may download the Host Institution Project Proposal (Application) Template. This document includes all questions that host institutions must complete when they submit the required online application through the Fulbright Specialist Program Portal (FSP). This document would be helpful in reviewing all of the required information before submitting the online application.

Applications must be submitted online through FSP Portal – https://worldlearning-community.force.com/FSPHost/. Please read the Host Institution Application Instructions carefully and follow the instructions for the submission of applications.

Note: Project proposals submitted via post/courier or email as a Word or PDF attachment will not be accepted. All project proposals must be submitted online through the FSP Portal only.

Last date for submission of the application on the portal: is April 30, 2023.

Research Collaboration involves researchers from different stature, funding status, country and different organizations. Basically, their collaboration builds based on mutual understanding, work towards mutually interesting and beneficial research. These can be classified into different types.

In this article, ilovephd provides the classification of 6 types of research collaboration

What is Research Collaboration?

The term ‘Research collaboration‘ implies that a team of individual researchers is working toward achieving a common goal.

Although each team member may be responsible for a defined area of research, all researchers should understand how their work will contribute to the completion of the whole project.

6 Types of Research Collaboration

1. Collaboration within the institution

  • In this type, members of two research groups in different departments of the same institution work together on a project.
  • No external funding is involved to carry out the research.
  • The work is divided reasonably equally between the two groups.
  • All members will meet together regularly to review their progress and plan for the publication of their results.
  • Communication can take place with collaborators in close proximity to each other (e.g. face-to-face).

2. Research collaboration with a private company

  • In this type, a researcher from a private company works with the research group of an academic faculty member for several months.
  • During this time the non-academic researcher pursues his own project while learning about current techniques and research questions from the graduate students in the group.
  • Communication can take place with collaborators in close proximity to each other (e.g. face-to-face).

3. Collaboration with other institution

  • In this type of collaboration, a researcher(Senior researcher) who receives federal funding will invite and collaborate with other researchers(Junior researchers) from other institutions.
  • This basically happens to complete a large data collection.
  • Communication can take place with collaborators through E-mail or Telephone.

4. Research collaboration with other institution in person

  • In this type, a researcher travels to another institution for a particular period of time to learn some new techniques or collecting data.
  • Each time a researcher visits the institution he/she stays for 2-3 weeks and participates in the research of the other research group.
  • Communication can take place with collaborators in close proximity to each other (e.g. face-to-face)

5. Collaboration based on task expertise

  • Research has several parts(Data collection, Conducting an experiment, result in analysis, reviewing result and so on).
  • In this, a data collecting expert will collaborate with data analyst from the same or other institution upon some mutual agreement.
  • They agree to each carry out their own analysis of the new compound and then combine their results for publication.

6. International Research collaboration

  • In this type, in order to gain a more global perspective of the research problem, the collaboration among researchers will be established from different countries and different institutions.
  • All research groups independently apply for their own funding.
  • The collaborators agree that all data collected regarding the question they are studying will be made available to the entire collaboratives.
  • Communication can take place with collaborators through E-mail or Telephone.

Collaboration helps to increase one’s capacity to approach more complex research problems and gives a chance to work with a similar interested scientific peer group around the world.

The Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) was established to promote the basic research in Science and Engineering and to provide financial assistance to persons engaged in such research, academic institutions, research and development laboratories, industrial concerns and other agencies for such research and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto are the primary and distinctive mandate of the Board.

SERB aims to build up the best management systems which would match the best global practices in the area of promotion and funding of basic research.

SERB Core Research Grant (CRG)

The SERB Core Research Grant (CRG) scheme encourages emerging and eminent scientist in the field of science and engineering for an individual centric competitive mode of funding. Since the scheme provides core research support to the active researchers, the existing name Extramural Research (EMR) has been renamed as Core Research Grant (CRG).

This article gives the 6 important tips to prepare a successful project proposal for SERB Core Research Grant (CRG).

Tip 1: Title preparation

For title preparation, List all accepted abbreviations and words that information the reviewer of the content and mission relevance.

Arrange abbreviations into a compelling and write an informative title that fits the space.

When selecting the title, emphasize the product of the research, not the process.

Tip 2: Project Summary

The project summary is the most important part of the project proposal for SERB.

The summary of proposal should be easily interpretable by laypersons.

Try to avoid writing the proposal in the last minute.

Don’t write the review background or past accomplishment.

Create linear flow of logic when linked, one after another.

Make the summary as a standalone page.

Tip 3: SERB Presentation

Try to restrict the number of slide from 5 to 8 when preparing the propsal presentation.

The first slide must be the Title with Affiliation.

Write a clearly about the proposed objective and expected outcome.

Neatly present the work plan and methodology.

List the publication details from the last 5 years which should be relevant to the proposed work.

List the detailed ongoing and completed projects (if available)

Important ->Details of budget: clearly specify the budget which is really required to accomplish the proposed project.

Tip 4: Common errors to avoid

Trt to avoid poor methodological approach in the proposal.

The proposal should not be conflict with any ethical issues.

Avoid lack of adequate justification.

Tip 5: Beware of predatory journals

Avoid Publishing your research in predatory journals

Articles published in predatory journals may be one of reasons to get you project rejected.

Tip 6: Before Submission

Revisit the complete proposal twice before submitting. A simple error will create a bad impression at first sight.

Proofread before submission and check whether you used the correct format given from SERB online.

Also, verify all the symbols and fonts, plots etc.,

How to apply SERB CRG:

The Call for applications will be notified through the website www.serbonline.in and www.serb.gov.in. The application form along with a proper research proposal highlighting the research work to be undertaken should be submitted online through the website www.serbonline.in.

Hope, this article helps you to prepare a better and successful CRG proposal.
