What is 3D Sensing?
“The only constant in the technology industry is change.”

- Three-dimensional sensing is a process of capturing a real-world object’s length, width, and height with more clarity as well as in-depth detail.
- The most interesting part is – 3D sensing going to rule the next ten years right from our mobile camera to robots and drone.
Technologies used in 3D Sensing
STEREOSCOPIC VISION
- Stereoscopic vision is nothing but a normal human vision.
- Capturing images is just like human eyes from two cameras then merged into a single picture.
- The variation from one camera’s capture and other one makes the in-depth 3D image.
STRUCTURED LIGHT PATTERN
- In this structured light pattern, different patterns of light(dots or line) projected on the object using laser projection. during this camera simply captures the reflected lights from the object.
- The camera mounted triangularly to the projection module then captures the reflected light.
- Pattern difference between camera an projection gives the picture perfect 3D coordinates of the object.
TIME OF FLIGHT
- ToF is also similar to the structured light pattern, here light waves are projected on the object and captured by the camera.
- The time distance between the transmission and reception are calculated and the observed co-ordination gives the good 3D image.
Apple and 3D sensor
- Apple Inc developing a 3-dimensional sensor system for their upcoming iPhone in 2019.
- It is quite different from the normal face-ID camera available in iPhone X, probably it’s going to be placed on the rear side of the device to give in-depth sensing feature to the rear camera.
- So, we can expect more augmented reality games and applications in a couple of years.
- It said to be, the new 3D sensing iPhone is developed based on Time of Flight algorithm.
Applications of 3D sensing
-
Air traffic control: In 3D displays, navigation of aircraft is better compared to a 2D display.
-
Oil and gas exploration: 3D displays gives more accurate seismic data which helps to detect exact place of oil and gas deposit.
-
Medical operations: outer and inner organs of the human body from 3D sensing and display help to doctors and surgeons to understand patients health condition clearly.
-
Self-driving car: 3D sensors produces perfect distance and height of the obstacles which improves the safe navigation of self-driving cars.
-
Natural disasters: three-dimensional Geospatial data helps better preparation for natural calamity as well as rescue operations.
-
Robotics: 3D sensing improves robotics performance in numerous ways like navigation, learning, responsive action, and obstacle detection etc.
